What the job actually involves
You will write the plan before you see the data. Questions, measures, and interpretation rules, committed in advance, which is harder and less comfortable than deciding afterwards.
You will report null results. Including to funders who were hoping for something else, and without hunting for a subgroup in which the effect appears.
You will label your own best findings as exploratory. The most interesting thing in a dataset is frequently the thing nobody planned to look for, and it goes in the report as a hypothesis rather than a conclusion.
You will work in both languages. Instrument design and cognitive testing happen in English and Spanish in parallel, and fieldwork happens on both sides of the border.
There are no publication or finding-count targets. A programme that produces one solid null result has done its job.
You will spend time in the field. This is not a practice where design happens at a desk and collection is outsourced. Analysts observe interviews and sit in on cognitive testing, because instrument problems are visible in person and invisible in a dataset.
How we recruit
The salary range is in the advertisement, along with the fieldwork expectation, so you can judge the role before committing time to it.
Methods matter more than tooling. We would rather hire someone who can explain why a comparison is invalid than someone fluent in a particular statistical package.
The technical exercise is short and paid. It uses a synthetic dataset, takes about ninety minutes, and is discussed rather than scored.
Spanish fluency is required for most roles, not preferred. Fieldwork on this border cannot be run through an interpreter.
Every application receives a reply within two weeks of the closing date, including unsuccessful ones.

Designs and leads research and evaluation programmes for clients across West Texas and southern New Mexico. Produces the written analysis plan for each programme, recording the specific questions, the measures and how each concept is operationalised, the comparison groups, sample and power requirements, the rules by which a result will be interpreted, and which subgroup analyses are planned, and agrees that plan with the client before any data is collected or examined. Reports findings answering pre-recorded questions as confirmatory and all other findings as exploratory hypotheses. Reports null results with the prominence a positive result would receive.
